Featuring Lunawood ThermoWood® supplied by Wood Source, Sunset combines modern architecture, energy-efficient design, and natural materials to create a Net Zero Energy Home that embraces the beauty of Boulder’s urban and mountain landscape.
Located just a few blocks from downtown Boulder with sweeping views of the iconic Flatirons, Sunset demonstrates how thoughtful material selection can define the character of a home. Designed to blend urban living with a strong connection to nature, the residence balances clean architectural lines with the warmth and texture of real wood.
The project incorporates a range of sustainable design strategies, including a brise soleil to optimize solar gain, a high-efficiency heat pump system, a solar roof array, and a high-performance building envelope. Large retractable glass walls further strengthen the connection between interior and exterior spaces, allowing the Colorado landscape to become an integral part of everyday living.

A key element of the home’s architectural expression is the use of Lunawood ThermoWood® on the façade. Luna Triple was selected for the lower-level cladding, garage door, and front façade accents, bringing depth and visual interest through its distinctive three-dimensional profile. The natural wood surface creates a refined contrast with the home’s contemporary forms while reinforcing its connection to the surrounding environment.
For the exterior brise soleil, the architect chose Luna SHP 2×6 battens. Thanks to the exceptional dimensional stability of thermally modified wood, Lunawood provides the authentic character of real timber with enhanced durability and performance. The chemical-free battens are designed to withstand demanding climates while maintaining their natural beauty over time.
The result is a contemporary residence where architecture, sustainability, and natural materials work in harmony. Through the use of Lunawood ThermoWood®, Sunset showcases how modern design can achieve both environmental performance and timeless aesthetic appeal.
