Doris Duke Theatre in Massachusetts
Located in the wooded landscape of Jacob’s Pillow in Becket, Massachusetts, the Doris Duke Theatre has long been a cornerstone for performance and artistic expression. Following its loss in 2020, the opportunity arose to reimagine this beloved venue with a renewed sense of purpose and resilience. The design embraces both tradition and innovation by creating a contemporary theatre that honors its history while offering a warm, inviting setting for future performances and gatherings.
The restoration of the iconic Doris Duke Theatre at Jacob’s Pillow called for a material approach that could honor its cultural legacy while supporting a new generation of performances. Following the events of 2020, the project team set out to rebuild not only a structure, but an experience that represents resilience, craftsmanship, and connection to nature.
At the heart of this is Lunawood ThermoWood® Spruce, selected for its natural durability, refined appearance, and ability to age gracefully over time.
Designed by Mecanoo and constructed by Allegrone, the theatre embodies a quiet, modern sensibility that complements its woodland surroundings. The use of unfinished ThermoWood Spruce, allows the façade and architectural details to evolve naturally—weathering into a soft silver-gray that reflects the passage of time. This living surface reinforces the project’s intent: to create a building that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its environment.
ThermoWood Spruce was selected not only for its refined aesthetic, but also for its performance in demanding outdoor conditions. Its dimensional stability and resistance to decay make it an ideal solution for cultural spaces that require longevity without compromising design integrity, while the smooth finish and custom milling bring precision and warmth to every surface.
