Lynnwood Lane Retail Centre, South Africa
Lynnwood Lane is a retail centre situated on a narrow site adjacent to Lynnwood Rd, one of the main arteries in Pretoria. Lunawood Thermowood were specified for all external timber cladding and ceiling details due to its quality and low maintenance and because in time it would add to the general aesthetic of the centre as it weathers to its recognisable grey shading.
Lynwood Lane was conceived when the developer Lynx bought the site adjacent to Burger King and the Grove. They approached Living Planet Architects, a practice that promotes sustainability and context appropriate design solutions, to design a new retail centre to supply the greater region surrounding the centre with additional convenience retail options.
The client required a low maintenance structure that makes maximum use of a narrow site that is situated on an inclined topography with a 5 m fall from Lynnwood road towards Highway street that also contained a building setback of 10m from the adjacent main road. All these restrictions led to the design of a slim three-story structure with a basement that bleeds out onto the natural ground level on the northern side of the building. Adjacent to Lynnwood road it appears as a two-storey structure that celebrate the human scale, resting on the basement parking below.
A nearby plantation of trees gave rise to the corporate identity for the centre that mimics the local context and inspired the design and materials used in the convenience centre.
