Lunawood ThermoWood® becomes part of the built courtyard at Habitare Naapurit
At Habitare in Helsinki, 2–6 September 2026, visitors can experience how wood can shape architecture when the same material flows throughout an entire architectural concept.
At the Naapurit exhibition, stand 6c2, designed by Arkkitehti Takkunen, the aesthetics, tactile qualities and natural scent of thermally modified wood become an integral part of the spatial experience.
A courtyard that evolves with its residents
Habitare Naapurit is a built thematic exhibition that creates an imaginary courtyard setting within the exhibition hall – a place designed to evolve with its residents. The suggestive buildings and the spaces formed between them invite visitors to explore living, architecture and materials as a holistic experience. First introduced at Habitare in 2024, the Naapurit concept receives a new interpretation in 2026, designed by Arkkitehti Takkunen.
This year’s Naapurit exhibition is designed by Oulu-based architects Eeva and Tapani Takkunen. Their approach emphasises a strong sense of experience, the interplay between space and light, and a distinct sense of place. The design also draws inspiration from traditional building materials, allowing their natural character and imperfections to remain visible rather than concealing them.
Throughout the exhibition, traces of craftsmanship and a deliberate avoidance of over-refinement are combined with carefully considered structural details and the timeless, powerful presence of natural materials – from workshop-style floors and shingle walls to a sauna stove built from a massive piece of natural stone.
Lunawood ThermoWood® adds its own layer to this architectural composition. The material is used in an exceptionally wide range of applications, including exterior façades, mosaic-like flooring and decking surfaces, an atmospheric sauna, and striking ceiling structures whose delicate, veil-like composition filters light into the space. Visitors can experience how the same wood material can flow from exterior to interior spaces and from small details to larger architectural surfaces.

Wood enhanced by heat and steam
Lunawood ThermoWood® begins with Finnish pine and spruce and a simple production method. The properties of the wood are enhanced in Finland using heat and steam without any added chemicals. Thermal modification improves the wood’s dimensional stability and resistance to decay, creating a versatile material for both interior and exterior architecture.
Alongside its technical performance, the wood’s natural variation, warm tone, tactile quality and forest-like scent are an essential part of the Naapurit experience. Lunawood ThermoWood® is chemical-free, resin-free and dimensionally stable – qualities that have also made it a natural choice for sauna interiors.
