Produced sustainably without chemicals

Lunawood is a pioneer and an expert in modern wood modification thanks to its enhancing of wood’s natural properties, while respecting and preserving the environment in the thermal modification process. Nordic Lunawood ThermoWood® is a natural material produced with heat and steam only – and without chemicals. We produce trademarked ThermoWood® products using a patented and annually audited process.

The International Thermowood Association (ITWA), the owner of  the ThermoWood® trademark, supervises its member companies’ production and quality control processes. This supervision is conducted by Finotrol Oy as an independent third party. Based on Finotrol audits, Lunawood has the right to use the ThermoWood® trademark.

In the patented thermal modification process, we transform from Nordic pine and spruce into Thermowood that is long-lasting, dimensionally stable, resistant to decay and resin-free, without using any toxics or chemicals. It can be used inside or outdoors, in any climate.

100% chemical-free Thermowood process

The patented production process is based on the gradual thermal modification of the wood, wherein the chemical and physical properties undergo a permanent change. Thermal modification enhances Nordic wood’s properties throughout the wood. During the process, the wood is treated with steam and heat only, no chemicals are used at any stage of the process.

Circular economy – By-products as a business

Our aim is no wood waste sent to landfill. We have been able to establish a successful business based on circular economy, even at our own mill in Iisalmi.  One example of this is the production of Lunawood Thermowood Composite TWPC.

The production of Thermowood generates side streams, such as planing dust. We use this dust in the production of Lunawood Thermowood Composite TWPC. It contains 2/3 Thermowood fibers (planing dust) and 1/5 high-quality Fortum Circo® recycled plastics. Thanks to our side stream, Lunawood Thermowood Composite has the same features and benefits as Lunawood Thermowood, making it the most stable wood composite decking available on the market. It is more resistant to temperature changes than any other composite material and is highly suitable for all weather conditions.

By producing composite decking material from our by-products, we are able to sequester carbon dioxide emissions for longer compared to using the by-products for energy directly or as wood pellets. A certain proportion of our planing dust is sold for the production of wood pellets.

We are constantly searching for other circular economy solutions and are continuously considering new uses for by-products.
