Lunawood and Vieremän Lämpö ja Vesi partner to advance sustainable energy through biogas

Lunawood and Vieremän Lämpö ja Vesi (VLV) have signed a preliminary agreement for the supply of biogas. The goal is to expand local biogas production and establish a biogas plant running on agricultural feedstock and required gas pipeline. The preliminary agreement enables further development of the project and forms the basis for a full supply agreement.

Lunawood has already transitioned to 100% renewable electricity and invested in energy efficiency. In Iisalmi, Lunawood invested in modernizing the factory’s energy production system in 2022, enabling the use of electricity for heat generation and the replacement of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) with alternative fuels. Shifting to biogas from LPG would be the next significant step towards carbon neutral production.

Lunawood’s target is to achieve carbon neutrality in production by 2035. Transitioning to biogas would allow Lunawood to further reduce its emissions and increase the share of renewable energy in its operations.

“This is a significant step towards Lunawood’s climate targets and a great example of the value of local collaboration. Reducing emissions in our operations lowers the carbon footprint of our products, helping our customers reduce the embodied carbon of their projects. Together, these actions support the transition towards a more sustainable, low-carbon built environment”, says Lunawood CEO Tomi Ristimäki.
