Lunawood first ThermoWood® manufacturer to have its climate target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Lunawood’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target. The commitment to this target further strengthens Lunawood’s position as a pioneer and market leader in sustainable ThermoWood®.
The validation highlights Lunawood’s commitment to combat climate change. Lunawood is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from own operations (scope 1 and 2) by 42% by 2030, from a 2021 base year. Lunawood’s emissions reduction target is consistent with reduction levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets. Tackling climate change requires ambitious action from companies.
The majority of Lunawood’s scope 1 and 2 emissions are related to heat production and electricity use. Lunawood’s key actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are to improve energy efficiency and increase the share of renewable energy.

“This is a great step for us and shows our commitment to cut emissions. We have invested significantly in improving energy efficiency and this year we started shifting to renewable electricity”, says Arto Halonen, CEO of Lunawood.

In 2023, a large-scale modernisation of energy production was carried out at the Iisalmi mill, being the largest investment in Lunawood’s history. From January 2024 onwards, Lunawood has started a gradual shift to renewable electricity.

“To our customers, we want to be a sustainable partner and as a result of this work, we also further reduce the carbon footprint of our products”, Halonen concludes.
