The new fire station in Kremmen, Germany, designed by Dorn-Becker-Architekten, gives a public service building a contemporary yet context-sensitive architectural identity. Located on Schloßdamm, opposite Kremmen’s historic Scheunenviertel, the building responds to its surroundings through a timber-clad façade that references the wooden gables and doors of the traditional barns nearby. Its expressive roofline faces Schloßdamm and gives the building a dynamic silhouette, visually reflecting the speed and readiness associated with emergency response.
A Distinctive Timber Façade for Public Architecture
The building is clad with Lunawood ThermoWood® using the Luna Triple 32×140 cladding. The profile’s deep grooves create a refined batten-look surface that accentuates the building’s angular geometry while allowing faster installation compared with individual battens. The natural timber surface adds depth and warmth to the otherwise sharply defined architectural form.
Produced using only heat and steam, Lunawood ThermoWood® offers a durable and sustainable façade solution without the use of chemicals. The patented ThermoWood® process enhances the wood’s durability and dimensional stability, making it well suited for demanding public buildings and long-term exterior applications.
Left untreated, the Lunawood ThermoWood® façade will gradually weather to an elegant silver-grey patina. This natural ageing process allows the building to integrate harmoniously with its surroundings over time, while maintaining its performance and requiring minimal maintenance throughout its lifecycle.
By combining functional planning, a distinctive roof form and a durable natural façade material, the Kremmen fire station reinterprets the traditional fire station typology. It serves as an efficient operational facility while establishing a distinctive architectural presence for the local community.
