Haus S is a carefully considered transformation project located in the scenic Salzkammergut region of Austria. Originally designed by the client’s father, the house held decades of memories and emotional value for the family. The aim of the renovation was to modernize the home with respect for its history while improving its functionality for the next phase of living. Lunawood ThermoWood® plays a key role in defining the identity and detailing of the new addition.

The transformation focused on the upper floors, where both the first and attic levels were removed and replaced with simple, cubic volumes that follow the original square footprint. This architectural approach creates a striking contrast between the solid brick base of the existing structure and the new timber extension above.

Sustainable Lunawood Cladding and Decking
Lunawood ThermoWood® plays a key role in defining the identity and detailing of the new addition. The façades are clad with Luna Parallelogram SSS 20×92, installed in a diagonal pattern that adds a distinctive rhythm and dynamic surface to the cubic form. Lunawood ThermoWood®’s dimensional stability allows for precise mitered corners, ensuring sharp, clean detailing at every junction. This high level of accuracy supports the modern architectural language and gives the extension a refined, handcrafted appearance.
The untreated Lunawood ThermoWood® will naturally weather to a silver-grey patina, which helps Lunawood blend harmoniously with the garden and surrounding landscape. The cladding not only enhances the building’s visual presence but also provides lasting performance in the Alpine climate, where durability, low maintenance, and resistance to warping are essential.

In the outdoor areas, the terrace features Luna SHP Profix 2 26×140 decking with hidden fixing, providing a clean and seamless surface that complements the building’s architectural clarity. The natural surface of Lunawood decking creates a pleasant feel underfoot, while the hidden fastening system supports a minimalist aesthetic.

A Harmonious Dialogue of Natural Materials
“By reducing the materials to a few harmoniously coordinated ones, we created a cozy and calm indoor climate. The facade blends perfectly with the garden and the landscape – we can’t get enough of it and look forward to it every day!” says the House Lord.
Material selection was a central aspect of the design process. By combining products from Lunawood Collection with other carefully selected natural materials, such as solid brick and plastered elements, the renovation strikes a balanced dialogue between old and new. The restrained material palette also contributes to a calm and inviting atmosphere both inside and out.
