Located in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the former office building now known as Hotel Popal has been transformed through a renovation project designed by MONK Architecten. The redesign gives the building a new architectural identity while responding to the evolving character of the surrounding Werkspoorkwartier district. A key feature of the project is the expressive façade clad with Lunawood Thermowood, where varying profiles from the Panel System family and Luna Triple create a rhythmic and sculptural surface.

Rhythmic wooden façade with Lunawood Thermowood

The façade of Hotel Popal is clad with Lunawood Thermowood, chosen for its durability, dimensional stability and natural aesthetic. The timber was fire-retardant treated, meeting the project’s safety requirements while maintaining the visual qualities of thermally modified wood.

The façade design combines profiles from the Luna Panel System family in multiple widths together with Luna Triple to create a dynamic, three-dimensional composition. The panels are installed in alternating horizontal rhythms aligned with the window heights. This layered arrangement gives the façade a strong architectural pattern while emphasising the building’s stepped roofline and sculptural geometry.

Naturally weathered and maintenance-free façade

The façade of Hotel Popal is clad with fire-retardant Lunawood Thermowood. Despite the fire-retardant treatment, the wood weathers naturally and turns silver grey over time, just like genuine Lunawood. In this project, the timber has been left without surface treatment, allowing the façade to develop its natural patina. The result is a durable and low-maintenance façade that ages beautifully.

The Lunawood products for this project were supplied by our partner Gras Wood Wide.
