Wohnwerk, founded by Andreas Bähr and Mrs. Hilgenberg in Böddiger, Germany, is a newly built ecological studio and exhibition space. It serves as a showcase for their wide range of solid wood products and a welcoming space for people to come together and share ideas. With over 25 years of experience in woodworking, living concepts, and interior furnishing, the couple has always had a deep passion for natural materials. That’s why they made conscious choices when selecting materials for this meaningful project. One of their most exciting discoveries was Lunawood ThermoWood®, which immediately captivated them.

Background – From a Dream to a Vision

The idea of building an atelier and exhibition space had been growing for years. To develop living and furnishing concepts alongside their customers, the couple initially created a circus wagon as a mobile consultation studio and model space. As demand for high-quality solid wood and custom-made furniture grew, they began to specialize in sustainable wood and wood-aluminum windows.

Eventually, their space became too limited, and the vision of a permanent atelier with a workshop area and concept store took form. When they acquired a plot of land, it came with a unique set of challenges: flood risks, historical preservation regulations, an unusual shape, and of course, a limited budget. All of this ruled out conventional building methods.

Staying true to their values, they insisted on using natural materials and creating a healthy indoor climate—hallmarks of wooden construction. They also wanted to take part in the building process themselves.

“The shape of the site gave us a clear brief,” says Andreas. “It was important to us that the building blend harmoniously into the landscape and its surroundings—with wood and greenery, especially on the roof.”

Wohnwerk's facade features Luna Bevel Hidden Nailing boards. The decking is Luna SHP Profix 2 26x140. The decking has already turned beautifully in silver grey.

Making the Dream a Reality

The foundation was laid with 68 screw piles, drilled up to four meters deep. The building itself was constructed in two levels and two phases, topped with a green roof for added sustainability and integration into the landscape. For insulation, they used wood fiber, followed by a stunning Lunawood wooden façade (Product: Luna Bevel HN 26×142).

Their journey with Lunawood began during several trips to Sweden, where they noticed how wooden surfaces on docks and terraces aged beautifully and naturally—unlike anything they had seen in Germany.

“We asked ourselves: What kind of material can endure these conditions without surface treatment?” explains Andreas. “Our research led us to thermally modified wood—and eventually to Lunawood.”

Sandra didn’t need much convincing:  “The moment she saw the first video of Lunawood, she said, ‘That’s it!’ And when we received the sample box, the scent alone sealed the deal,” Andreas recalls. “It was everything we wanted—sustainable, durable without surface treatment, and simply stunning.”

A Builder’s Experience

Working with Lunawood proved to be a joy. Compared to materials like Siberian larch, Lunawood was significantly easier to handle:

  • The boards were lightweight and resin-free
  • The pieces were perfectly straight
  • The tongue-and-groove system fit together effortlessly

“We had absolutely no issues during installation, and we’re completely thrilled with the end result,” says Andreas.

With Lunawood SHP Battens, Anders Bähr designed a screening system to prevent overheating and direct sunlight indoors.

Wohnwerk Böddiger is a perfect example of what happens when passion, sustainability, and design come together. It stands as both a workspace and a statement—a harmonious, inspiring place built with care, intention, and natural beauty

The Lunawood façade does not require any surface treatment and will gradually turn grey.
